Koclířov by Svitavy: pilgrimage place of (inter)national importance in a secularized state
Jančík, Jiří ; Havlíček, Tomáš (advisor) ; Kučera, Zdeněk (referee)
In the masters dissertation Koclířov by Svitavy, a place of Marian pilgrimage, is presented as a lively seat of the Czech-Moravian Fatima, the national centre of Fatima Apostolate in the Czech Republic, a unique phenomenon within the universal Catholic Church. The centre of pilgrimage was established in 1995, hence it is relatively new. Pilgrims from all over Czechia as well as foreign pilgrims come here to enjoy its unique spiritual atmosphere. The centre offers a wide range of services including a traditional monastic cake shop and Shepherd shop offering devotional articles. Spiritual seminars held here once a month, every first Saturday, are particularly popular among the pilgrims. Serene monastery complex offers many sights and invites to quiescence. A Holy Gate opened by Mons. Jan Vokál, bishop of Hradec Králové diocese, in April 2016 in the frame of the Holy Year of Mercy is yet another unique feature of the place of pilgrim. Thus Koclířov has become one of the important church centres as this privilege is usually given only to cathedrals and minsters of particular dioceses. The Czech-Moravian Fatima in Koclířov will coordinate a wide range of festivities to celebrate the 100th anniversary of apparition the Virgin Mary in Fatima in Portugal in 2017. Number of Czech dioceses and their parishes...
The geographies of religion from a feminist perspective
Klingorová, Kamila ; Havlíček, Tomáš (advisor) ; Daněk, Petr (referee) ; Rochovská, Alena (referee)
This dissertation is based on the postsecularisation thesis which highlights the increasing role of religion nowadays. In the postmodern society, religion is understood not only as an objective truth, but also as the individual experience of a person. In relation to societal changes, a new paradigm has appeared - the new geographies of religion - which incorporates the individuality of a person into the discussion about religion in space. The study of religion as an individual experience could be significantly enhanced by feminist approaches which enable the inclusion of personal experiences. Therefore, the thesis contributes to the current direction of the geographies of religion connecting these with feminist approaches. The contribution of feminist approaches is assessed from the theoretical and empirical point of view. Feminist approaches develop themes of hierarchy, everydayness, emotionality, and embodiment, and thus contribute to the research on religion in a postsecular context. The empirical goal of the thesis is to consider the creation of sacred place and how religion frames the everyday experience of women. The thesis seeks to enrich Czech cultural geography with religious experience as another element forming space. The methodological framework uses the potential of a combination of...
Koclířov by Svitavy: Pilgrimage place of (inter)national importance
Jančík, Jiří ; Havlíček, Tomáš (advisor) ; Holubová, Markéta (referee)
This thesis presents the Marian place of pilgrimage 'Koclířov by Svitavy', the residence of the Czech-Moravian Fatima, the apostolate centre of the Czech Republic which plays a unique position within the Catholic Church. The aim of the work, coming under the geography of religion, is an in-depth study of the relatively recently established pilgrimage center, which dates back to 1995. Analyzing how this particular pilgrimage location has transformed, I have tried to decipher a total of 4 assumptions that are seemingly contradictory and illogical: the start of the location's sanctification in this extremely secular destination; the phenomenon of the Polish Pope St. John Paul II. in this area, over 250 km away from his native Wadowice and the post- secular activities of religious pilgrims. How could this formerly sleepy and remote village become a pilgrimage center of regional, national or even international importance? And how does mutual cooperation with the municipality and the local school work? To reach a relevant theoretical framing of pilgrimage throughout Europe, as well as the global context, I drew mainly from Polish literature, where pilgrimage has deeper roots and plays a traditional role. In addition, perhaps the only department of religious geography of the world is based at the...

The influence of religion on the status of women in selected countries The diploma thesis comes from theoretical concepts of feminist geography, geography of religion and from the research of gender inequalities. It tries to analyze the influence of selected religions on the status of women in the society and to compare Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam and those without religion in this field. It comes from a thought, that gender equality is an important element for social and economical development of the state and for democracy. Based on quantitative analysis of data from 41 chosen states of the world, the thesis endeavours to judge the impact of religion on the status of women in terms of social, political and economical level. One of the premises of the thesis is a presumption, that the status of women is the best in society where the majority of population is without religion, then in Christian society, Buddhist and Hinduism society and the worst in Muslim society. Based on results of statistical analysis it may be stated, that involvement of women in the public sphere has a positive impact on the socio-economical development of the state. Religion amplifies gender...
Territorial identities and religion in Czechia and Central Europe
Reeves, Daniel Vinson ; Havlíček, Tomáš (advisor) ; Kostelecký, Tomáš (referee) ; Majo, Juraj (referee)
Territorial identities are a mosaic of many different cultural elements, from which religion is just one subset. This dissertation explores elements of religion as they are expressed within territorial identities at varying scale levels in Czechia and several neighboring countries. The use of a religiously themed postage stamp or a Christian toponym, the inclusion of a religious site in a hand drawn map of one's hometown or one's position regarding the return of disputed properties to the churches they were taken from years ago, each of these can be an expression of territorial identity. Whether actively practiced or passively acknowledged, religion is bound up in our sense of place. The four separate studies that make up the body of this dissertation present religion's case as an integral ingredient within the territorial identities of Central Europe. In terms of spatial differences, Slovakia and Poland are more likely, as compared to Czechia, to recognize and include elements of religion in their territorial identities. This is true at both national - postage stamps - and local levels - toponyms and cognitive maps. Each of the methods used to explore the presence of religion in expressions of territorial identity - postage stamps, toponyms and cognitive maps - proved effective. The comparative...
